April is Sustainable Beauty Month! What Can you Do to Celebrate #SBMONTH2018?

Hello all and happy Earth/Sustainable Beauty month! After basing Refined Beauty off of a green circle mission and the inclusion of non-toxic, sustainable hair products in our salon, April truly is a great month for us. We take it as a time to remember why we chose to be a green circle salon and how it has been greatly beneficial for us, our wonderful clients, and of course, our Earth's ecosystem. While we could go on for days about why it's great to be a #sustainablebeauty salon, we thought we'd share how we can all begin to make a difference through sustainability.

To learn how you can be an effective part of #SBMonth2018, keep reading!

"Once a year we decide to set everything else aside and celebrate Earth Month, or what we now call Sustainable Beauty Month. It’s a time where we choose to focus on supporting and celebrating our Davines salons that work towards balancing beauty and sustainability". - Davines

Limit your Shower Time

It's important to actively watch how much water we use in one day. When it comes to beauty, it's actually quite easy to use a minimal amount of water. In our experience, it takes no more than a 5 minute shower to properly clean and rinse both your hair and body. It's even proven to be enough time to shave your legs! While in the shower, cover things like brushing your teeth and cleansing your face. This helps spare the amount of times you turn the sink on and off.

Re-Use your Cosmetic Bottles

A huge part of being sustainable is re-use. Instead of tossing out your empty cosmetic containers and bottles, wash them with a drop of soap and a cup of water. Once they've dried, think about refilling them with another cosmetic product or cutting it open for a more mundane use. Filling your containers with things like hair ties, bobby pins, or even better, a plant, is the perfect way to feel like the ultimate conservationist. Among our favorites is the stylish Davines product bottles!

Use Natural Lighting

This is a not-so-obvious tip which is why we love it! Thinking of ways to be sustainable requires thinking outside of the box and paying attention to how we might be wasteful on a daily basis. To conserve more energy, consider moving your vanity or makeup area toward a big window or a space in your home that retrieves a lot of natural light. This will not only give you correct makeup coloring but keep you from absorbing too much electrical energy in the bathroom.

Support Sustainable Beauty Companies

While still growing, the sustainable beauty industry has been so beneficial to our Earth and beauty professionals. We are proud to call ourselves a sustainable beauty and Davines salon. One of the best parts about supporting sustainable beauty companies is the fact that they support other charities. See a full list of sustainable beauty companies here!

The Best Foods for Ultimate Hair Growth

It's no secret that having healthy hair means covering all of your health bases. While you can have the best products or stylist on hand, the key to long term (healthy) hair growth lies within your diet, water intake, and overall health. We've always thought of this as an interesting way to maintain and restore hair growth, as it's not often talked about.  What if you could start your journey to hair growth through food? Well, we're about to show you the best foods for healthy hair growth and you won't want to miss it. Keep scrolling to learn!

Protein

The hair is made up of many vitamins and nutrients. Including certain things into your diet simply enhance or supplement them. One of the major building blocks of your hair is protein which is thankfully, quite easy to implement into your daily diet! For strong and protein-based hair, be sure to regularly eat foods like eggs, Greek yogurt, and poultry (turkey or chicken).

Omegas & Fats

Your body doesn't produce the healthy, unsaturated fats that you need and get from foods like nuts, avocados, flax seeds, and salmon. By including these foods into your diet, you reduce inflammation, ultimately letting things like hair follicles do their thing: providing mega shine and fullness!

Vitamins A, E, & C

Vitamins - we know we need them but making sure we're sufficient in them is easier said than done. By including vitamins A, E, and C into your diet, you up the amount of iron and protein in your body and supply the hair with things like collagen, giving rich body to your hair growth structure. Vitamin rich foods: citrus fruits, spinach, and orange veggies (sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, mango, carrots, and pumpkin).

Iron

Having strong hair is just as important as having long hair. If your goal is to have long hair, making sure it's strong and sustainable is what gives it a chance for long term health and resistance against constant coloring and/or styling. The best iron-rich foods to work into your diet are dark leafy greens, Legumes, and dark chocolate!

Now that you know the key foods for ultimate hair growth, it's time to start focusing on how and when you'll start implementing them into your diet. One of the ways we love to track our progress is with a hair journal and pictures on our phones. Starting on day one, track what foods you plan to put into your diet and take a "before" photo. Save both of those in your notes app and check back a month or two later, documenting the progress that's been made. We guarantee you'll be surprised with the hair growth progress and with your overall health! Have you ever tried changing your diet to improve overall hair growth? We would love to know your stories and experiences in the comments below!

 Icy Blondes

There is so much YAS about this new color trend, we could scream it from the rooftops! Instead, we're just going to tell you about why this bold look may be the perfect new thing to dress up your overall look while staying professional. We saw a huge wave of bold colors in 2017, including the silver-grey hues. 2018 is already making its claim by taking it down a tiny notch to a more sophisticated level. Icy blonde is definitely the new grey and we are all for it. Not only does this color illuminate all skin types, it looks amazing styled or left alone. It's automatic chic vibe makes for an effortless look every time. The best way to care for a bold hair move like this? Wait a day or two after the coloring to shampoo it, begin using a quality treated-hair shampoo & conditioner, use cooler water temps in the shower, and treat it with a hair mask and products like these:

•Davines Nounou Hair Mask with tomato extract: Perfect for Highlighted Hair

•Alchemin Shampoo + Conditioner in Silver:  Feeling Brassy?  Use this and balance out those unwanted tones

•Dede Hair Mist, leave-in conditioning spray:  Great for all hair types

Choppy Textured Short Hair

If you haven't noticed, things are getting a little spunky this year and we cannot get enough! We could create looks like this all day. A choppy, textured look can lead to so much creativity and originality, something we feel those industries are in desperate need of! We are loving this look due to its step up from the slightly-layered lob that rocked 2017. We'll miss the lob, but we;re all for change! We know what you might be thinking though... And we're here to tell you that styling this type of look can be even easier than styling a lob. Our go to tips & tools for short, textured hair:

•The Beach Waver:  Create perfect undone waves

Curly Shapes

If we see anything make a debut this year, we want it to be CURLS! The new natural curl-inspired looks have been rocking our world and we are here to give you some tips on how to both get curls and maintain them. Depending on your hair type, natural-looking curls may be really hard to achieve or difficult to tame. Hair naturally straight? Get all the texture you can with things like salt spray, dry shampoo, and minimal shampoo use (stick to just washing your scalp). If you already have natural curls that you're wanting to give more shape to, look to a quality curl cream. We also recommend the following tips to both achieve and maintain gorgeous curls:

•For straight hair: Use a 2 inch curling iron + hairspray to create hold

•For curly hair: Try the New Love Curl Cream which leaves curls soft, shiny and defined

•Diffuse curls: Dry locks with a diffuser.  This will control the airflow to keep curls bouncy and add volume

The Shag & Bangs

We know 2018 just started, but this look is already the winner in our opinion! The 70s has had a huge impact on this new year and is a trend we hope stays strong! Bangs can be scary but so great for any face shape, skin tone, and personal style if their originally cut properly. The nice thing about this look is that it's a long-bang look. This is a great way to feel risque about your new hair venture while keeping the ability to style easily. A few tips & tricks for styling this type of look:

•Break out the bobby pins to train your bangs to fall a certain way

•Blow dry and style bangs first while wet so you can control the natural fall of your fringe

•Add a medium hold hairspray after styling to add a bit of texture and hold

You deserve to get excited about something new this year. Why not make that something-exciting YOU? If you're on edge about trying out these bolder looks for 2018, never hesitate to talk it out with one of our consultants, research until your heart desires, and stay updated on all of our styling tips on the blog.  Happy new year beauties!

Think Clean & Declutter

Whether it's your work space, the food you put into your body, or the products you put on your skin, keeping a simple and clean mindset is the best way to start developing a healthy relationship with beauty. Start thinking about the things you need versus the things you don't. If you tend to have dry skin and hair, maybe skip on the overload of hot tools or heavy makeup. Pay attention to what your body, hair, and skin react to, both in positive and negative ways. Once you start to track this, you'll start to feel a sense of control over your relationship with beauty, ultimately making you feel beautiful in more ways than one. You can also start by doing little things such as de-cluttering your space. A good rule of thumb is to have 3-5 skin & hair products at a time and 5 basic beauty products that you plan to put on your face. A physically clean beauty space will also guarantee a clean space in that beautiful mind of yours!

Maintenance is Key

A healthy relationship with beauty takes work, but it's always worth it in the long run. You'd be surprised how a little bit of maintenance goes a long way. Here are just a few little things that you can do to make a big difference in your beauty routine: drink more water, don't overuse makeup or hair products, lessen smoking and alcohol, always wash your face at least two times a day, and DRINK. MORE. WATER. The key is to realize that beauty maintenance is like a wagon. It's okay to fall off every now and then, as it's not an easy thing to keep up with, but you must always get back on to keep things moving at a healthy flow.
